Knappa Loggers Forestry Team

There is a reason Knappa High School’s nickname is the Loggers.

And some three dozen students have just shown why.

For the second consecutive year the school’s forestry team has returned from the state competition at Peavy Arboretum in Corvallis with the first-place team trophy.

Teacher Jeff Skirvin notes the program has only existed for five years and Knappa has won three times. It was the samallest school repesented but Knappa brought the largest team to the event.

Students from six high schools competed in a variety of activities over a two-day period. Events included job interviewing, public speaking, tree identification and timber cruising.

Knappa students fared well, with Warren Skirvin taking first in speech, Nick Landwehr earning top honors in map reading and Chris Whitworth earning second place in the job interview category.

Master Sgt. Robert W. Brolliar honored at retirement ceremony

A retirement ceremony honoring Master Sgt. Robert W. Brolliar was held in March at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma. He served for 20 years, from March 2, 1992 to March 28, 2012.

The son of Ralph “Skip" and Cathy Brolliar of Astoria, he was born in Astoria and graduated from Knappa High School in 1991.

Brolliar served at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and Fairchild AFB in Washington. His last assignment was to the 97th Training Squadron at Altus AFB, where he served as inflight refueling instructor/evaluator, student flight superintendent, KC-135 wing training superintendent and additional duty first sergeant.

Over the course of his service, he received several awards, including two Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Medals, five Aerial Achievement Medals, three Air Force Commendation Medals and three Air Force Achievement Medals.

Knappa Represented in the Astoria Regatta

Six North Coast students form Regatta Court

Heidi Thompson is one of six high school students that have been chosen to represent the North Coast and 2012 Astoria Regatta Association. They join Queen Rebecca Alfaro, daughter of Greg and Joni Alfaro, a senior at Astoria High School.

Heidi Thompson, daughter of Don and Alice Warren-Thompson, is the junior class president at Knappa High School and a member of National Honor Society. A member of the Little Ballet Theatre at Maddox Dance Studio, she is also a captain on the AHS dance team. She was the historian for the Knappa Future Farmers of America chapter, is a member of the Knappa Boosters and participated in various community service activities. She has received recognition for several outstanding achievements, including receiveing the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, an American Legion award, and a Student of the Month award.

The other representatives are: Alexis Mather, Helen “Taylor” Tikkala, Emma Bergin,Emily Severson, and Chandra Whitaker

Escort and chaperone for the Regatta Court are Don and Renay Patterson.

This year marks the 118th year of the Astoria Regatta Festival. The Regatta Court will give speeches, make appearances and attend parades throughout the season.

The theme for this year’s festival, which will be held Aug. 8 to 12, is “Regatta 2012, A New Beginning.
