As we enter the final week before spring break, things are busy in the Knappa School District. High school sports are off to a good start with the baseball team’s decisive win last week against Warrenton and the softball team’s solid win in their game against Neah-Kah-Nie on Friday.

What a busy week it has been in our schools. This week we celebrated Classified Employee Appreciation Week, where we honored our bus drivers, kitchen staff, office staff, program assistants, custodians, maintenance employees, and our bus mechanic. They are key to our ability to educate students and keep them safe.

Thank you for your patience with us as we dealt with the school delays on Tuesday. It is an exciting week in Knappa sports. Last night, the boys’ basketball team beat Portland Christian in a “nail biter” by a score of 49 to 47 in the Northwest League playoff game. The girls’ team plays tonight against Vernonia. On Saturday, both teams will be playing in Vernonia in another League Playoff game. The state wrestling championships occur next week. Isabella Ramirez, Kiya Roe, Corbin Roe, and Donnie VanGundy will represent Knappa in the event. Best of luck to them in the tournament.

Welcome to a sunny and cool first day of February. We have a number of things happening in our schools right now. Elementary students are almost finished with their MAPS assessment, and for most students we are celebrating solid growth. If your students is still finishing up, please encourage them to do their best so we can accurately determine how to assist them during the second part of the year.

Dear Knappa Community, I hope that you had an enjoyable extended weekend. As a person who has spent a good portion of my life in the southeastern United States, I have seen significant movement toward Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream within my own lifetime. Hopefully, the Holiday both reminded you about the progress that has been made toward equity in our society, while also giving you a moment to pause on how you can contribute to a better society moving forward. Whether that is caring for somebody in need, confronting an unjust act, or donating to charity, it is my hope that each of us can use Dr. King’s legacy to make a difference.

I hope that the new year is treating you well. Aside from a little wind and power outage surprises, things are running smoothly in our schools. We are glad to have the students back for more fun and learning.

The boys’ basketball team (also 2-1), plays at Kennedy tonight and Willamina tomorrow, before also engaging in tournament play during the break.

It is a joy to be serving your students on this first full week of December! It was great to see so many fans at the home wrestling meet on Wednesday and at the games on Friday night. We continue to seek feedback related to our district improvement plan. Please remember to take our parent survey if you haven’t already. On December 15, Hilda Lahti Elementary and Music Director Jackson Hughston invite you to come to the sing-a-long at 5:30 pm in the HLE gym. The high school will be hosting our annual blood drive on December 7 from 10-3. Scheduling is available on our website.

We hope you had a restful and festive Thanksgiving, whether you traveled or remained in beautiful Knappa. Yes, it’s that time of year. A time when Hilda Lahti is celebrating dress up days, the high schoolers are hosting the annual blood drive (December 7) and having fun with “winter week” activities, the first high school home basketball games are being played, wrestling is up and running, and musicians are preparing for their Holiday Concert (December 15).

I write to you this week in a state of sorrow. Over the last two weeks, we have lost two members of our community in fatality accidents on Highway 30. This has impacted many students within our schools, some who lost family members directly, and others who either witnessed one of the accidents or are impacted having known a victim. Our hearts go out to those affected by these losses.

It has been quite a week in Knappa. At the league cross country meet last week, the Knappa men placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, and 13th of the 25 participants, scoring plenty of points in their team win. The rain that started last week has been perfect for our baseball field project. The hydroseed was applied last Thursday and it has rained every day since. On Wednesday night October 26th, I will be hosting a community conversation in the HLE cafeteria at 7pm. Knappa School District is always trying to learn and improve. Friday October 28th, from 3:30-5:00 pm, of course is Trunk or Treat in the school parking lot. Sugar high before the football game anybody??

Welcome to October! As we begin the second month of school, it is nice to have some normalcy to the way school feels. Monitoring case counts, complying with mask mandates, and the general stress of the COVID period seem to, at least for now, be in the rear view mirror. We remain in contact with the health department, and we are following safety protocols, but school feels like pre-COVID again

School is now in full swing. It is so nice to be back to a normal year. In the classrooms, we can see teachers implementing newly learned literacy strategies with the support of our new curriculum. Students seem to be in good spirits in both schools. The preschool students are getting the hang of how to “do school.”
Fri Sep 23 05:57 PM

It was wonderful to welcome our preschool and kindergarten students back to school on Monday. Last week, the teachers had the opportunity to meet individually with parents so that we all could launch the year on the right foot.

We have spent the summer planning, hiring personnel, updating our facilities, training our teachers and support staff, purchasing school buses, providing summer learning programs, and doing preliminary work related to the bond construction project.

As summer is nearing an end, we are excited about the start of school. The roofing work at the high school is completed. The grounds, maintenance, and custodial teams are finishing up their cleaning, pulling weeds, and painting. Teachers will be “back to school” in the next two weeks doing professional development and getting prepared for the students to arrive.

While our students have been on summer vacation, we have been working hard to prepare for the fall. This includes facility improvements and we just received our new school bus!
